The Institute, incorporating the Basil Hetzel Institute for Medical Research

Who is Dr Basil Hetzel?

The Honourable Dr Basil Hetzel AC is one of the National Trust's Australian Living Treasures. His research work helped improve the lives of millions of people worldwide, especially in developing countries.

His research found that many common illnesses for people in developing countries, such as goitre, cretinism and severe mental retardation, were caused by an iodine deficiency. This could be completely prevented by introducing iodine into the diets of pregnant women and Dr Hetzel has spent much of his life campaigning to incorporate iodized salt into the diet of communities where iodine is lacking.

The building itself

The brand new research facility, The Institute, incorporating the Basil Hetzel Institute for Medical Research (pictured above) opened in March 2009 and is home to about 120 researchers, including students, who are dedicated and committed to discovering new ways of dealing with disease and illness.

The $19 million state-of-the-art research facility represents the largest amount of money ever spent by the State Government on a specialist medical research centre.

The Institute’s Facility Manager, Kathryn Hudson spoke of the benefits of the new facility for the researchers and said, “Its been fascinating to witness just how much the change in physical space has impacted positively on researcher relationships, collaborations and built a strong sense of community.”

The Institute has the support of the Honourable Dr Basil Hetzel AC.
