The Basil Hetzel Institute

Who is Dr Basil Hetzel?

The Honourable Dr Basil Hetzel AC is one of the National Trust's Australian Living Treasures. His research work helped improve the lives of millions of people worldwide, especially in developing countries.

His research found that many common illnesses for people in developing countries, such as goitre, cretinism and severe mental retardation, were caused by an iodine deficiency. this could be completely prevented by introducing iodine into the diets of pregnant women and Dr Hetzel has spent much of his life campaigning to incorporate iodized salt into the diet of communities where iodine is lacking.

The building itself

The Basil Hetzel Institute (pictured right) is home to about 185 researchers, including students, who are dedicated and committed to discovering new ways of dealing with disease and illness.

The Institute is made up of researchers and workers from The University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The Institute has the support of the Honourable Dr Basil Hetzel AC.

New research facility

The future of research at the Basil Hetzel Insitute has been guaranteed after the State Government reaffirmed its commitment to building a multi-million research facility (artist's impression pictured above). The building, opposite the current Basil Hetzel Institute building in Woodville, will be double the size of the current building and will allow researchers access to up-to-date facilities and equipment previously never seen in South Australia. The State Government has pledged $19 million towards the new building.
