Current CampaignsSummer Appeal
Our 2009/10 Summer Appeal was a chance for us to thank our supporters for their continual support and to update them on just some of the many exciting advances in medical research that have taken place at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital over the past year.
One of these successes was the launch of The Centre for Inflammatory Diseases Research, which was possible due to a significant program grant from TQEH Research Foundation. This has enabled research on the causes, effects and treatments of chronic inflammation, a common element of asthma, stroke, arthritis and rhinosinitis to be undertaken in a collaboration between the Rheumatology, Otolaryngology and Neurology departments.
Also, the number of deaths from stroke in SA have been more than halved due to research undertaken at The Institute to develop the Stroke Research Programme and Acute Stroke Unit at TQEH. The installation of the Penumbra device at TQEH has meant numerous stroke sufferers have been able to have blood clots ‘vacuumed out’, enabling them to make complete recoveries. One of the recovery stories was covered by The Advertiser, and in case you didn’t see it, you can view it as a PDF here.
Advances in medical research that are benefiting those suffering from diseases and debilitating illnesses are only possible thanks to our supporters.
