New Microscope for the Department of Haematology and Medical Oncology

SEEING is believing. And Dr Sally Stephenson’s research team will certainly be able to see a lot clearer with their new microscope. A generous donation of $13,037 from the Coopers Brewery Foundation allowed the team to purchase the Nikon inverted microscope, which will help the research to significantly advance.

A protein has been identified which is only found on the outside of cancer cells. It’s believed this protein helps tumour cells grow and multiply. Now the team has developed a specific antibody which can target the protein and not attack normal cells. This microscope will enable the researchers to look at the cells with a definition not before possible.

The donation of the microscope represents two firsts – an ability to look at the cells in a much clearer way and the first donation by the Coopers Brewery Foundation.
